You may find many cleaning products claiming to be natural and organic on their labels – but in reality most of them feature harmful ingredients that can damage the body (internally and/or external) and also affect the environment. A responsible cleaning service in Sydney will never use such products.

The veracity is such that most of the cleaning products don’t have a list of ingredients mentioned on them – no ingredient list means there is something fishy. It should always be looked upon as a red flag. These products are sans the ingredient list, perhaps because the composition comprises of some harmful ingredients.

Here is a short list of few harmful ingredients that are present in most of the cleaning products but are of particular concern because they could be carrying harmful toxins. Here in the list is a short description of each as to why you would want to avoid them.

Ammonia is a naturally occurring compound and is found in most of the cleaning products. Ammonia is harmful because it can cause breathing problem, skin burns, wheezing and irritation to the eye. Over exposure to ammonia can use fatal lung damage or lead to heart attack or blindness.

Ethylene glycol butyl ether – Butoxyethanol

Butoxyethanol is a type of glycol ether, which is used to deodorizing most specialty cleaners. Long term exposure to Butoxyethanol through inhaling or contraction with skin can cause liver, kidney and blood disorders.

We all use naphthalene as balls or in other forms, but actually naphthalene has been linked with cancer. It has been clinically proven to cause cancer. It is therefore advised to avoid naphthalene and paradichlorobenzene used in mothballs and moth crystals as these two ingredients are said to be possible human carcinogen.

Silica found in most abrasive cleansers used frequently in our offices and homes is made from finely ground quartz. Silica is carcinogenic if it is inhaled.

Xylene is a primary ingredient in some adhesives and spray paints. Laboratory experiments have shown that xylene is a harmful toxin which can cause reproductive harm or neuro disorders on excessive exposure.

Methylene chloride

Found primarily in paint strippers, Methylene chloride is also a key ingredient of many other types of cleaning products. International Agency for Research on Cancer has found Methylene chloride to be a possible human carcinogen. Some countries have regulated the use of the harmful chemical in cleaning products.

Chlorine Bleach or Sodium Hypochlorite is used as a disinfectant in many cleaning products, pesticides etc. Chlorine is however a common cleaner ingredient, which is moderately toxic. It has been linked with respiratory disease and cancers.
